About us

It was the early '80s, a time when colour TVs were still a rarity, and VCRs were a novelty, reserved for occasional movie nights. Kids back then had found their own special obsession—one that didn't rely on adults. Ishtiaq Ahmed’s novels. Alongside classic magazines like Taleem o Tarbiyat and Naunehal, these books became the go-to reads for a whole generation. Affordable enough to be bought with pocket money, they were frequently passed around at school or shared in the neighbourhood. But the real charm of these books lay in how they brought kids together, especially two friends who shared a ride on the same school bus.

One was the quintessential bookworm, the kind of kid who’d read an electric bill just for fun. The other? A laid-back student who could barely get through his own textbooks. The two struck a deal: the easy-going one would bring the novels, and the bookworm would read them aloud during their long bus rides to school.

Years passed, and their lives took different turns. The bookworm eventually found a way to turn his voice into a career, becoming a broadcaster and ad man. The laid-back friend, on the other hand, came to appreciate the value of reading, eventually rising to become one of the country’s top doctors. But every now and then, they’d meet up, and the memories of those school bus rides—of one friend reading aloud while the other listened—would come rushing back. It was during one of these reunions that the spark for an idea was born: Hamari Awaz.

'Hamari Awaz' is an online audio library where members can listen to audio versions of selected Urdu literature. This initiative serves several important purposes and addresses various needs within the global Urdu-speaking community.

For families from Pakistan or other Urdu-speaking regions living abroad, the second or third generations may understand spoken Urdu but often cannot read or write it. For them, PDFs or eBooks in Urdu are insufficient and useless. To bridge this gap and rekindle an appreciation for Urdu literature, what better way than to have someone read the books to them? Through this game changing platform, they can reconnect with the language and culture in a meaningful and enjoyable way. This initiative is also valuable for older generations who may have distanced themselves from reading Urdu over the years. By offering audio versions of classic and contemporary works, 'Hamari Awaz' gives them a chance to relive and rediscover the richness of Urdu literature.

Additionally, this service is a blessing for those with physical limitations, such as those with impaired vision or individuals whose physical strength may prevent them from holding a book. For them, listening to books is not just a convenience—it’s a gift that makes Urdu literature accessible once again.

In today's fast-paced world, many people struggle to find time to read. Between work, family, and other commitments, reading can feel like a luxury many cannot afford. Audiobooks solve this problem by allowing people to listen while commuting, during cardio walks or while doing household chores. With just a smartphone or laptop, listeners can enjoy their favourite books anytime, anywhere, without disrupting their busy lives.

Unlike the many YouTube videos that feature low-quality, unauthorized readings by non-professionals, 'Hamari Awaz' is committed to offering high-quality, legally licensed content. We ensure that all recordings are made with permission from authors and publishers, and that professional voice artists deliver the readings with accuracy and care. This commitment to quality makes 'Hamari Awaz' a unique and trustworthy platform for Urdu literature.

At the helm of this project are Dr. Waqar Kashif and Adnan Hasan Syed—the two driving forces behind 'Hamari Awaz.' While they may jokingly refer to themselves as 'lazy' and 'nerdy,' they are deeply committed to the mission of promoting Urdu literature and are always open to feedback and suggestions from the community.

We invite you to support and join us in this journey of rediscovering the beauty of Urdu literature through the power of sound.
